NORTH AMERICAN FJ FURY

Titles: North American FJ Fury No’s 1 and 2

The first of the Fury series, the FJ-1, was the first operational jet fighter in US Navy service. It carried over a number of features from the piston-engined P-51 aircraft including the basic wing and tail surfaces but only 31 were built as advances in aerodynamics quickly made its straight wing design obsolete. It did form the basis of the new P-86A Sabre which employed the new swept wing which became extremely successful and which itself became the basis of the later members of the FJ Fury series.

The FJ-2 was basically the same as the F-86 but navalised with an arrestor hook, longer nosewheel leg, etc. The FJ-3 was similar but fitted with the J65 jet engine (licence built Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire) in place of the original GE J47. The FJ-4 although looking similar was a complete re-design with a new wing and major changes in other areas.
