The MIL Mi-17 is the designation of Mi-8M helicopters when exported. The Mi-8M is a more powerful variant of the Mi-8 with the engines and transmission from the Mi-14 and a strengthened fuselage.

Production is undertaken at two sites in the Russian Federation, and licence production has been undertaken in China. A version produced to meet FAR 29 standards is designated Mi-171.
