Title: Fiat G50
The Fiat G.50 single engine single seat fighter first flew in 1937, entering service a year later and becoming the first all-metal monoplane with an enclosed cockpit and retractable undercarriage in Italian service.
The Fiat 74 radial engine was only rated at 870hp at take-off so ultimate performance was not the highest but the aircraft was very manoeuverable and held its own against comparable adversaries during the early part of the war. Initially the range was too short and it had insufficient armament, but the G.50bis introduced extended range and was the most numerous variant produced with 421 examples.
