Title: Grumman TBF Avenger
Designed by Leroy Grumman as Grumman’s successful entry into a US Navy competition to replace the obsolete TBD Devastator, the TBF Avenger first flew in 1941 and entered service in 1942. The aircraft was the heaviest single-engine aircraft of WW2 and was the first to feature a new Grumman wing-folding mechanism intended to maximize storage space on aircraft carriers.
In 1943 with Grumman production increasingly devoted to the F6F Hellcat, production was transferred to Eastern Aircraft and the aircraft was designated the TBM-1. The second major variant, and the most numerous, was the TBM-3 introduced in 1944 which had a more powerful engine and wing hardpoints.
The aircraft was used extensively by the RAF during WW2 and subsequently. The RCAF used a large number post-war. The RNZAF also used the aircraft including carrying out the first agricultural top-dressing trials.
