Title: Douglas F5D Skylancer
The F5D Skylancer was an all-weather development of the F4D Skyray, initially designated F4D-2N, but eventually the changes became so extensive that a new type designation was assigned. The changes included a more powerful engine variant, longer fuselage, thinner wing and area ruling of the fuselage, all intended to reduce drag and increase stability at high speed.
The first example was first flown in April 1956, but after four examples had been completed the US Navy cancelled the contract. Officially the reason was that the type was not needed by the Navy, but there was a suspicion that Douglas was gaining too big a monopoly on building US Navy aircraft. Two examples continued in research roles with NASA until finally being retired in 1970.
This title includes the flight manual and the maintenance manual for the Douglas F5D Skylancer. The files have been scanned from the original manuals and retain any colour pages.
